sweet itch horse

My horse suffers from sweet itch, what can I do?

The sweet itch season is already in full swing. Hopefully, you started trying to prevent summer eczema on time, so that your horse won’t be itching all season long. If you didn’t, it will be difficult to get your horse itch-free this summer. Fortunately, Finecto+ Horse can help you get rid of the sharp edges of sweet itch.

Only by starting early can you prevent sweet itch!

In most horses it is possible to curb sweet itch, but it all depends on timing and perseverance. Just preventing the first mosquito bite will get you a long way. You can do this by starting to use thesweet itch blanket as early as March, as well as by making your horse unattractive for mosquitoes with Finecto+ Horse. Be consistent and keep an eye on your horse.

You might, for example, find your horse stamping its feet a little on some days. When this happens, spray its legs with some anti-fly spray. You don’t have to do it every day, just on the days you find your horse stamping its feet. Be creative, think ahead and respond to signals. Another signal, for example, is that your horse is not sweating a lot when you ride it. This may indicate that it is not able to remove waste products from its body properly, including the herbs in Finecto+ Horse. If you notice this or any other symptoms/changes, take immediate action.

Complete approach against sweet itch

There is no single product that offers a complete solution. You can only get sweet itch under control if you adopt a complete approach. This entails the following:

  • Detoxification of the horse’s system
Ensure your horse’s immune system is optimal. Detoxify the horse’s system before and after the sweet itch season with therapy that lasts at least a month. We recommend to use the Detox of HELTIE horse.
  • Start using an sweet itch blanket early
An sweet itch blanket can easily be worn under a rain sheet. An sweet itch blanket on its own is not sufficient for preventing sweet itch in summer, but it is an indispensable part of the total strategy.
  • Start with Finecto+ Horse as soon as the temperature rises above 10 °C
Finecto+ Horse makes your horse unappealing to midges. An sweet itch blanket does not cover the whole of the horse’s body, but a supplement such as Finecto+ Horse does.
  • Limit sugars in the diet
Sugars are found not only in concentrated feed, but in raw feed and grass too. Check your raw feed for sugar and do not put your horse out in the field the morning after a cold night. Apply strip-grazing to ensure your horse can enjoy the grass section by section.
  • Allow your horse daily exercise
Exercise in the field is not sufficient. Walk with your horse for at least twenty minutes every day.
  • Put your horse in the stable at dusk
Midges are most active at twilight. It is therefore advisable not to let your horse out of the stable too early or return it to the stable too late.
  • Ensure your horse’s weight is optimal
Being overweight or underweight can have a negative effect. Start adjusting the rations and, if necessary, the workload in good time. Bear in mind that it can take months for a horse to lose or gain weight.
  • Stimulate the ECS system of the horse with cannabinoids.
The ECS system is the signal transmitter in the body. It checks at cell level whether there is a problem. The system then sends a signal to the brain so that it can send the correct auxiliary chemicals to the relevant cell. Read here how the ECS system works. Best is to use cannabinoids extracted from cloves.

Does Finecto+ Horse work for horses that are already suffering from sweet itch?

The answer to this question is the same for all sweet itch products; it won’t remove thesweet itch completely, but it will reduce the sharp edges. If a horse is already scratching heavily and is clearly suffering from an itch, it is almost impossible to put a stop to this.

We have experienced, however, that Finecto+ Horse does soothe the itch experienced by horses suffering fromsweet itch. Again, for the product to be as effective as possible, your horse must be in good health. The herbs are secreted through the skin, but only if your horse’s metabolism and circulation are functioning properly.

Conclusion

In short, be disciplined in your approach and think ahead. When treating summer sweet itch, not only is it important to treat your horse externally, but also to assess your horse’s rations critically. It is important to unburden the immune system as much as possible and to optimise your horse’s metabolism and intestinal flora. Good luck!
